We are now accepting court-ordered and lawyer-recommended volunteers who need community service hours for traffic violations.
Please email volunteer@shrhabitat.org to schedule your intake if you need community service hours.
Letters will not be provided to those individuals who did not complete an intake prior to completing hours.
Construction Volunteer Orientation
Please note, you will need to attend an in person orientation before registering to volunteer in construction.
Group leaders should also attend an orientation, however we recognize that this may not be possible for everyone. Please email volunteer@shrhabitat.org for an alternative to an in person group orientation.
Previous construction volunteers should take orientation as well, but we can waive this requirement on a case by case basis. Please email us at the email above for more information and include your full name so we can determine if we can waive orientation.
Orientations will take place the 1st Wednesday evening and the 3rd Saturday morning of every month.

You must be 18 to volunteer in construction.
Those 16 to 18 may volunteer in our ReStore or events with a youth waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian (see below) that is emailed prior to registering to: volunteer@shrhabitat.org

More Information on What to Expect:
Construction: Make a difference in your community by helping to build homes for local families! Opportunities are generally available Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with shifts from around 8:00 AM-3:00 PM. Anything from painting, trim work, window cleaning, landscaping, and carpentry work. Tasks assigned by staff and overseen by Red Hats, our leadership volunteers. No previous construction experience necessary. Current builds are in Chesapeake and Suffolk, but we also build in Portsmouth, Virginia Beach and Norfolk.
We build year round and builds are rain or shine. We email updates the week of a build if we suspect we may need to move or cancel your build, so please check your email before your shift. If you have not been notified of any changes for your build, but the weather is questionable the morning of your build, please check the top of the construction schedule for any changes before heading to the build site.
Construction shifts are limited to groups of volunteers no larger than 5 to ensure everyone is feeling engaged and productive. If you'd like to bring more, check out our Team Build page for more information about making a donation toward bringing up to 20 volunteers
We want to limit the impact our presence has on the neighborhoods we build. Most of the neighborhoods we build in are small with limited parking, so having numerous volunteers converge on them several times a week can cause some concern. Please try to carpool to the build site when possible. Please do not park on the neighbors' grass, impede traffic by parking on both sides of the road, or block driveways or mailboxes. We want to ensure the neighborhoods we build in have a positive experience by our presence. We appreciate your assistance with this!
Please be sure to arrive on time to get signed in and for the morning brief. Lunch will be at 11:30, so please plan to pack a lunch or be prepared to purchase one from a local restaurant. It is better for the environment that you bring your own water in a reusable bottle and we recommend you bring a pair of gloves.
There will be portable facilities available at the build site, but there may not be running water, so please keep this in mind.
ReStores: Share your time and talents at one of our two ReStores Tuesday – Saturday with shifts from 10:00-5:00. Can't stay all day? Not a problem, we just ask that you commit a minimum of three hours. Opportunities include sorting household goods, arranging furniture, inventory, and greeting and assisting customers.

When registering please be sure to watch the safety videos and read the Volunteer Waiver.

Dress in clothing appropriate to the weather. Shorts are acceptable in the summer, but long pants will keep your legs better protected in construction. You must wear closed toe shoes and don't wear something you'd hate to get dirty.

On the construction site, remember construction sites can be muddy. Please have long hair tied up and don't wear dangling jewelry, baggy or loose clothing and leave valuable jewelry at home.

There is no smoking on our property or build sites, please step off the lot if you need to take a smoke break, this includes vaping.

And we ask that you not use your cell phone while working.
