Be a Habitat Helper!
From grounds keeping at our offices on Tidewater Drive, to office help or helping salvage donations from homes, there is an opportunity for anyone's skill level or interest.
Grounds Keeping: Our property at 900 Tidewater Drive in Norfolk has a good deal of land that needs to be taken care of. You will pick up trash that blows on the property, mow, weed and clean up the parking lot. We will provide the tools needed to assist with this job, lawn mower, weed wacker, lawn bags, gloves, trash picker and gardening tools.
Salvage Crew: We periodically get calls from property owners who are about to rehab or tear down an existing home, and would like to donate the contents of the home to us, if we are able to remove them. These contents in include cabinets, doors, windows, even bath tubs and trim work. To help in this area you must have experience with power tools, home maintenance, construction or knowledge of how these sort of items are installed, so you are able to help remove them with little to no supervision.
There will be Habitat SHR staff on site to oversee the work, along with some senior volunteers, but often we are given very little time to salvage the items, so the more you know how to do, the quicker we can remove items. The more items we can salvage, the less that go into the landfill. Most items go to our ReStore to be sold, some go directly to construction.
Keep in mind many times there is no power or water on site. We will provide tools, or you can bring your own. This is an "as needed" volunteer opportunity and we maintain a list of volunteers interested in helping with to contact should an opportunity arise.
Volunteer Office: Our volunteer office could use your help recording and verifying volunteer hours as well as processing volunteer registrations. Are you good with a computer? Can do data entry, have experience with CRM or VRM services, able to work independently with little supervision, and are good with attention to detail? Then you are who we're looking for to help in this area. We will provide you with the computer and training on our systems and record keeping. Once trained, a weekly volunteer commitment would be preferred, and can be worked out with us.
