Darlene was selected into the Habitat SHR program in 2010. She is a Hampton Roads native and graduate from Lake Taylor High School. As of July, Darlene has worked for the City of Norfolk for 19 years as an Administrative Technician. Last year, Darlene went through a divorce and she moved into an apartment with her two daughters. Ashley is 18 years old and a senior at Booker T. Washington high School. Destiny is 12 years old and is in the 7th grade at Lake Taylor middle School.
Darlene heard about Habitat for Humanity through her sister who purchased a home from the organization. She encouraged Darlene to do the same and she did after she got herself back on her feet from the divorce. Fortunately, Darlene was approved the first time and is now waiting to make the Webster house her home.
Amazingly, Darlene is able to manage college in addition to her work and motherly duties. She is a sociology major at Tidewater Community College and when she graduates her ultimate goal is to be involved with an organization that provides assistance to people in need. Ideally she would like to work as a liaison between the school and court system or programs like Second Chances. Darlene is very thankful for all of the blessings that she has received in life and would love to give back to others. She and her daughters are very active with their church Faith Deliverance Christian Center. As active members, Darlene and her daughters participate in activities hosted by the church in their free time.
Darlene is a courageous individual, as of May 1, 2009 she added breast cancer survivor to her triumphs and tribulations. She is continuously conquering life as citizen, employee, mother, survivor, and will continue to pave her way through. The new home will help Darlene and her daughters continue on their path in life.
Darlene Shirley and her family were chosen for the Webster house in Portsmouth.
